The building envelope, also known as the building shell, is the shield that protects the occupants of the building from the outdoors. A good building envelope is one that allows occupants to create and maintain an indoor environment that is often very different from that outside. The temperature, the humidity and lighting levels, even the speed with which air moves, are unlikely to be the same as outside.

What areas of the building are considered part of the envelope? The answer is: everything that is on the plane of protection, including the roof, walls, windows, doors and everything that connects them together.

During the last 25 years, building scientists have discovered many ways in which the building envelope determines not only the quality of the indoor environment, but also the long-term durability of the structure itself. These discoveries have led to the development of materials and techniques that have measurably improved the performance of building envelopes everywhere.
